After spending five days in Moscow today we will be packing up and heading east towards Mongolia. I think to some up Moscow in one word it would have to be BIG! Everything is huge here, the road outside our hostel has eight lanes in one direction! Nearly every building I have walked past has been of monumental size and the prices are pretty big too! When shopping the other day I found a small box of fairtrade tea costing nine pounds!!!
There has been lots of brilliant surprises in Moscow. We happened to be here during the celebrations for the birthday of Moscow. On Sunday we went for a wander around the city and found that stages had been errected on the corner of every street and roads had been closed off to allow people to party in them.
There were so many different acts to see on the stages and the quality varied alot, from cheesy russian techno pop acts, to school children singing and dancing and lucky for us, we managed to stumble across the Moscow Symphany Orchestra! The Orchestra performed on a stage just infront of the Orthodox Cathedral (of Christ The Saviour) , it was an amazing thing to see and even better that it was free! Another highlight of my time here happened yesterday when we went to the Kremlin, as we enterered the Archangel's cathedral a choir of Brothers began to sing. The singing seemed so spontanious and they sounded so beautiful.
Despite the city being so huge I have manage to meet some locals. The other day we went to one of the parks and sat next to an old russian woman. She bagan talking to us, we explained that we couldn't speak russian (although the explanantion was in English!) but she happily chatted away to us and found it hilarious that we could not understand. She seemed to be saying she swims alot and I think she was trying to say she had been an olympic swimmer...I like to think so anyway!
Now we head eastwards in search of some real Mongolian adventures hopefully involving trekking on horses and staying in yurts!
